Former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's assassination convict A.G. The Supreme Court of India has decided to release Peririvalan.
Pereiravalan was arrested in connection with the 1991 assassination when he was 19 years old.
He was sentenced to death in 1998, which was later changed. He was sentenced to 31 years in prison.
He was convicted of supplying batteries to set up the bomb used to assassinate Rajiv Gandhi.
Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated by a suicide bomber in 1991 during an election rally in Tamil Nadu.
He is believed to have been assassinated in 1987 in retaliation for sending Indian peacekeepers to Sri Lanka.
Pereravalan was a member of the LTTE and was defeated by the Sri Lankan Army on this day in 2009.
The Tamil Nadu state cabinet has recommended to the governor to pardon him in 2018, but the Supreme Court has given the verdict due to delays in its implementation.
