Consumers are protesting against the Extraordinary Gazette, which has set a control price for several local rice varieties that are currently being sold at a lower price in the open market.
The Consumer Affairs Authority had issued the relevant gazette notification setting maximum retail prices for local white, red Nadu, white, red samba (excluding gambling samba) and milk samba.
According to the gazette notification, traders will start selling rice at the maximum retail price of ten rupees more than the prevailing prices in the open market. Consumers also point out that they have to pay.
The price of a kilo of white and red Nadu will be 210 rupees on May 3, a kilo of white red samba will be 220 rupees and a kilo of Kira samba will be 250 rupees in the open market.
However, the Chairman of the Consumer Affairs Authority issued a gazette notification yesterday setting a maximum retail price of 220 rupees per kilo of white and red Nadu, 230 rupees per kilo of white and red samba and 260 rupees per kilo of milk samba.
Consumers also point out that the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has issued a media statement declaring the maximum price of rice to be more than Rupees.
Commenting to the media, a shop owner said,
"We sell samba for two hundred and twenty rupees. Kira samba for two hundred and fifty rupees. Nadu sells for two hundred and ten rupees. Where is our business? See this board if you want. We given less than the control price."
