Petition to the Supreme Court against the permanent road blocks in Colombo !

A fundamental rights petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking an order from the IGP and other officials to remove permanent roadblocks in Colombo.

The petition was filed by Shenal Jayasekara, a resident of Gampaha and Hemantha Vithanage, an environmentalist.

The IGP, Fort Police OIC, are the respondents in the relevant petition.

The OIC of the Kollupitiya Police, the Road Development Authority, the Human Rights Commission and the Attorney General have been named.

The petitioners allege that the permanent roadblocks erected by the police in the vicinity of Temple Trees and the Fort area in Kollupitiya, Colombo violate the fundamental right of citizens to travel freely.

The petitioners have alleged in their petition that it is a severe harassment to the people.

The petition also alleges that it violates the fundamental human rights guaranteed by the Constitution. As a result, the petitioners have sought a ruling that the fundamental rights of the people, including the fundamental right to freedom of movement and freedom of assembly, are being violated through the construction of roadblocks.

The petitioners further request that an order be issued to the respondents including the IGP to immediately remove the permanent roadblocks erected in the Colombo area.
