Shashi Weerawansa, who was convicted of obtaining an informal diplomatic passport by submitting false information to the Department of Immigration and Emigration, has been released on bail.
That was when her appeal (May 31) was taken up before Colombo Chief Magistrate Nandana Amarasinghe.
Defendant Shashi Weerawansa was produced before the court by the prison.
Shashi Weerawansa was sentenced by the Colombo Magistrate's Court on Friday (May 27) to two years in prison and fined Rs. 100,000 for possessing an illegal diplomatic passport.
Accordingly, Shashi Weerawansa's lawyers filed an appeal against this last Friday.
Chaminda Perera, a resident of 233/16, Ratnayake Mawatha, South Thalangama, Battaramulla, had lodged a complaint with the CID on January 23, 2015.
Unauthorized possession of Sri Lanka Passport No. D3642817 in the jurisdiction of Colombo between 13th September 2010 and 26th February 2015 without legal authority (No. 16 of 1993, No. 42 of 1998 and No. 31 of 2006 (2006). The CID had filed two cases against her in 2015 alleging that she had committed an offense punishable under Section 45 (1) of the Immigration and Emigration Act No. 20 of 1948 as amended by the Acts.
