Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister of Agriculture and Wildlife Conservation has submitted a proposal drafted by professors from three universities on the promotion of agriculture and food security.
Given the recent situation facing agriculture in Sri Lanka, this proposal has been prepared under three categories namely short term, medium term and long term.
Accordingly, a team of ten professors representing the University of Peradeniya, the University of Ruhuna and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura recently submitted their proposals to the Minister of Agriculture, Wildlife and Wildlife Conservation, Mahinda Amaraweera at the Ministry of Agriculture.
The professors also said that the resolution should be implemented immediately if Sri Lanka is to overcome the food crisis that it may face in the future.
The Minister has stated that steps will be taken to implement the proposals taking into consideration all the points contained in the resolution.
He also said that Sri Lanka's food security program was in jeopardy during the last Maha season and the current Yala season.
Prof. Buddhi Marambe, Prof. Janendra de Costa, Prof. Devika de Costa, Prof. Aruna Kumara, Prof. Sivanandavel, Prof. Saman Dharmakeerthi, Prof. Methika Vithanage, Prof. Nalika Ranatunga, Prof. Warshi Dandeniya and Prof. Nilantha Liyanage were present on this occasion.
