At a time when the economy is in a very difficult position, a very sad event happened when the economy was taking very difficult steps to recover from that situation. That is, a group of supporters of former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa launched an inhumane attack on the 'Minagogama' protest in front of Temple Trees. They arrived from Temple Trees after attending a rally in support of President Mahinda Rajapaksa. They were also given the opportunity to open the entrance to Temple Trees, Galle Road. After coming out of that gate, they attacked 'Minagogama' and then went to 'Gotagogama' area in front of the Presidential Secretariat and demolished the tents and attics there. With this the whole country was on fire. As a result, several lives were lost and many others were injured, including the burning of houses of MPs, ministers and other dignitaries. You already know all these details. The law must be enforced on both parties who committed these acts of violence. No matter what the Secretary of Defense later said, it did not appear that the security forces, including the police, had acted properly to prevent this illegal activity and destruction of property.
The root cause of all this is the intense economic pressure that people have been facing for some time as the foreign exchange crisis has intensified. What was the end result of attacking the protesters and setting the whole country on fire without taking adequate steps to resolve those issues? Political and social instability is on the rise. That is to say, the steps taken by the Central Bank and the Ministry of Finance to rebuild the economy are being severely damaged. This is the most important thing of all. The Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe made this revelation at a media briefing held recently (May 11). Basically, he said, immediate political stability was needed. Or that it will be difficult for anyone to recover the country from this economic abyss. He also lit another red light. That is, he will step down as Governor of the Central Bank unless a stable political situation is established within two weeks. The Governor of the Central Bank Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe told the media on May 11 at the Central Bank Headquarters that he had made it clear to the President and other party representatives that he would resign from the post of Governor of the Central Bank if the political parties did not unite and achieve political stability in the country soon.
The Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe said,
The Governor of the Central Bank confirmed this during a media briefing on whether you had stated during a discussion with a group of representatives of political parties that you would resign if political stability in the country was not achieved soon.
He explained:
"This was not the case when I wanted to take over as the Governor of the Central Bank. The Mirihana incident had not taken place at that time. That was the beginning of this political instability after I came. After that the events continued. My hope was that political stability would be achieved within two weeks. Therefore, the ongoing economic program will be successful. It's been a month now. The situation has worsened since last Monday. I have now conveyed that message to people of all political parties. If they do not come together and achieve political stability in any way, this country cannot be rebuilt. It does not matter who I am or who I am not. No one can recover this country economically when there is such an unstable situation. In such a chaotic country, in a country where law and order is not functioning properly, in a country where there is no stable political situation, it is difficult for anyone to be the Governor of the Central Bank.
I have stated that I will not be in this position unless such a political agreement is reached within at least another two weeks.
The reason is that there is no solution that I was. It is not possible for a Central Bank to rebuild this country alone, even if I or anyone else comes to this position. If the country does not have that essential stable political situation. If that happens, social and political instability will develop and the country will be in a difficult situation. I have no hope of acting as the Governor of the Central Bank in such a regime. That was made very clear to all political parties, including the President, when this happened last week.
There is already a shortage of essential materials. If it goes on like this for a few more days, we will have to be without electricity for another 10 to 12 hours. Petrol and diesel will be lost. No gas. Peaceful or violent mass protests occur because the people have no choice. Therefore, a lasting political solution is needed as soon as possible.
The Governor of the Central Bank Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe has given a clear message to the government as well as all political parties. That a political compromise must be reac
