"Drop the Aeroflot case": Attorney General asks court

If a Sri Lankan court issues further orders in the Aeroflot case, it could be prejudicial to the agreements between the two countries and contrary to Sri Lankan government policy, the Attorney General told Colombo Commercial High Court Judge Harsha Sethunga  to dismiss the case.

Additional Solicitor General Sumathi Dharmawardena made this request while appearing before the court on behalf of the Attorney General.

The Additional Solicitor General further stated that the plaintiff in this case, the Irish company, had obtained an injunction restraining the aircraft from leaving the country by abusing its power and concealing facts from the court.

The Additional Solicitor General stated that the case could not be continued as the enjoining order issued by the court had been dissolved. Defendant Aeroflot's lawyer told the court that the plane had flown to Russia after the court's injunction was lifted, but so far no other Russian company's aircraft has been able to land in Sri Lanka.

After considering all the facts, the judge stated that as the case is a special case, the inquiry will commence on the 5th and after considering the facts, an order will be issued. Accordingly, the case is scheduled to be heard again on July 5.
