Protestor sentenced to three and a half years in prison by Matara Magistrate's Court

 

The Matara Magistrate's Court yesterday (06) sentenced a man to three and a half years in prison for arresting and damaging a police three-wheeler while blocking a protest on the Matara-Mahanama Bridge on the Matara-Colombo main road demanding fuel.

The order was issued against a youth who was arrested for assaulting and damaging a three wheeler belonging to the Matara Police Headquarters during a protest demanding fuel on April 19 at the Mahanama Bridge in Matara.

The Matara Magistrate and Isuru Nettikumara pronounced the verdict and sentenced the convict to three and a half years imprisonment with hard labor.

He was convicted on four counts.

The first charge is six months' imprisonment and a fine of Rs. He was fined Rs. 1,500 and sentenced to one year imprisonment and Rs. 1,500 for damaging state property.

The court also ordered him to pay a loss of Rs. 50,000 for damaging the three-wheeler.
