Sri Lanka People's Front (SLPP) MP Sarath Weerasekera says that the life expectancy of Sri Lankan women who use firewood is higher than that of men in developed countries that use modern and clean energy.
He was speaking in Parliament today (June 7).
He pointed out that the life expectancy of people in modern, clean energy consuming countries is around 80 years and the life expectancy of a Sri Lankan woman who uses firewood is 80.1 years.
He noted that the use of firewood was for the development of the country and not for its decline.
“People in the rich rich countries who use modern clean energy fuels have a life expectancy of 80 and 85 years. But in Sri Lanka, the life expectancy of women who use hardwood to buy gas is 80.1 years. This means that some indicators in Sri Lanka have reached the highest level in South Asia. It shows that the use of firewood is for the development of the country and not for the decline. ”
He therefore pointed out that more attention should be paid to the supply and use of firewood.
He further stated that the use of firewood is an important factor for the sovereignty of the country as well as energy and food security.
“Although the use of firewood today is underestimated as a tribal process, until the 1800s, firewood was the world's main energy source. By 2020, 10% of the world's total energy consumption will come from firewood. In the 1800s the world was plagued by famine and famine. Even Karl Marx wrote articles on fire theft and the punishments meted out for it. ”
