Special notice to rice traders


The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) has arrested 186 traders for selling rice at exorbitant prices and 479 traders for refusing to sell rice without displaying the price and to release them on bail.


The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said in a statement that more than 2,000 rice raids and inspections have been carried out island wide so far.


A total of 24 cases have been filed in the last few days and the convicts have been fined around Rupees. 3.2 million for 22 of them.


The court also imposed fines of Rupees. 100,000 on 19 shops, Rupees. 300,000 on one shop and Rupees. 500,000 on two other supermarkets.


The Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) urges wholesalers and retailers to purchase and sell rice in a manner that allows them to sell rice in accordance with the maximum retail price.
