The internal sources warned that if this happened, the oil refining process would come to a complete standstill and the fuel crisis facing the country would be exacerbated.
They point out that the closure of the Sapugaskanda oil refinery from time to time is a serious threat to its vitality.
The oil unions also warn that a crude oil tanker has been anchored in Sri Lankan waters for days and that the situation will worsen if it is not purchased.
A senior official of the Ministry of Energy says that steps are being taken to expedite the purchase of crude oil for the refining process.
At present the Sapugaskanda oil refinery processes 350 metric tons of petrol, 750 metric tons of diesel, 1300 metric tons of fuel and 550 metric tons of kerosene per day.
