The prison headquarters has issued a statement regarding the inmates of the Watareka Prison who allegedly came to the Galle Face Peace Struggle and assaulted the people there.
The statement said that in the Thalahena area in Malabe, a group had attacked the buses carrying prisoners to the Watareka prison.
The prison headquarters said that 58 inmates had escaped at that time.
Prison officials and inmates were injured and are being treated at a hospital, where 123 inmates are being held, the statement said.
The public is requested to take necessary steps to return the 58 inmates who are currently out of security to the Prisons Department or the nearest police station without any harassment if they have any information.
A statement issued by the Prisons Headquarters further stated that the reports made by various social media outlets that the detainees were being used to attack protesters were untrue and that they had not been involved in such illegal activities.
One prisoner in the video, which is said to be circulating on social media, said:
"We have been conducting a rehabilitation program for two years. He is accompanying us from the Watareka Prison.
