Army Commander - Major General Vikum Liyanage


Major General Vikum Liyanage has been appointed as the 24th Commander of the Sri Lanka Army by President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

The relevant letter was handed over by the President to Mr. Vikum Liyanage at the President's House, Fort, Colombo.

Vikum Liyanage, currently the most senior officer in the Army, will be promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General with the assumption of duties as the Commander of the Army today (June 01).

Educated at Vijaya College, Matale, Vikum Liyanage joined the Sri Lanka Army on October 27, 1986 as a Cadet Officer. Vikum Liyanage, who received his basic military training from the Sri Lanka Faculty of Military Science, Diyatalawa and the Pakistan Army Academy, was posted to the Gajaba Regiment as a Second Lieutenant.

During his 35 years of distinguished career, Vikum Liyanage has held a number of Staff and Adviser posts including Commanding Officer, Commanding Officer, Commanding Officer, Brigade, Corps, Security Forces Command, 4th Gajaba Regiment, USA, India, Pakistan, Indonesia and several other countries. And vocational training courses.

Mr. Liyanage was the Commanding Officer of the 8th Gajaba Regiment of the 57 and 56 Divisions during the humanitarian operation and was instrumental in bringing many victories to the LTTE against terrorism. He has won many medals including Ranavikrama, Warrior Medals, Eastern Humanitarian Operation Medal, Northern and Eastern Operation Medal.
