COPE recommends distributing 60% of gas cylinders to Colombo and Gampaha districts

Litro Gas to distribute 60% of its daily gas cylinders to the Colombo and Gampaha districts, which are overpopulated and limited to alternative energy sources.

Its chairman, Prof. Charitha Herath, made the recommendation today (May 20).

Katuwa has instructed the people living in the densely populated Colombo and Gampaha districts to make such distributions within the next one week, taking into account the limitations of alternative energy sources.

Allocated to import gas under Indian loan facility c. Litro receives $ 160 million Dr. Vijitha Herath, Chairman of Tlitro, stated that the necessary steps will be taken to purchase the gas at a cost of Rs. 120 million and that the gas can be supplied for three months after the completion of the initial work.

Accordingly, the COPE Chairman has instructed that the necessary steps be taken to import gas under the Indian loan facility within the next two weeks as soon as possible and to take immediate steps to reduce this congestion.

Also from the World Bank Adv. A loan facility of Rs. 80 million is to be received and accordingly, it is expected to go for a new term tender, the Chairman of Litro has stated.

Litro Gas, a subsidiary of the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation, will also look into the possibility of providing some financial strength from the Insurance Corporation's reserves at this time.

The COPE Committee has also recommended to the Chairman of the Insurance Corporation and the Secretary to the Ministry of Finance.

The COPE Chairman also directed Litro to take immediate action to publish the relevant information on the website and through a telephone application to make the public aware of the manner in which gas is distributed on a daily basis due to the large number of gas queues in the current crisis situation.

The committee also pointed out that this would enable the consumer to know exactly how many cylinders will be delivered daily on a given day through the relevant sales agent, thus avoiding the inconvenience of the public waiting in long queues for gas cylinders.

It also advised Litro to develop the existing hotline number 1311 into a more efficient 24-hour operational information delivery unit.
