Kantale farmers mining in paddy fields !

It is reported that a group of farmers in Kantale who are fed up with farming have started digging in their paddy fields while cultivating their paddy fields.

Farmers in the Potan Katuwa, 10 Ela Yaya, Agbopura and Divulgaswewa yayas under the Kantale Wewa are cultivating paddy for their own consumption.

Farmers have been asking for permits to mine gem mining, a way of earning dollars, as they have been given annual permits to mine gems on these lands for some time but have also stopped doing so for about two years.

These farmers say they have no faith in the current government's crackdown, and that they do not have enough money to cultivate paddy fields due to shortages in the country's oil, fertilizer and diesel prices and high prices, and have not even been able to save the gold they had by mortgaging their crops last season. They further state that they are in a desperate situation.

He was speaking to Indika Paranavithana of the Kantale Business Farmers' Association.

“No one in our business got even 40% of the harvest last season. After the harvest was disposed of by machines and fertilizers, loans could not be repaid. That is why people are afraid to touch farming this season. Now the government is not even paying compensation. So he has chosen the easiest way for these people to have children.

This is also a good way for the country to earn dollars. In the past, gem merchants from almost all parts of the island flocked here. Because gems appeared everywhere in Kantale. Gem mining was stopped due to lack of permission for that industry. As licenses are currently issued by the Gem and Mining Bureau, we request that the authorities look into the matter and issue permits to farmers. ”
