"We do not even have the reserves to import even a week's worth of essential commodities," said Dr. Nandalal Weerasinghe, Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
He said, "If the government does not have enough revenue, it will have to spend money to pay the salaries of public servants. The Central Bank will have to go through that process. There is nothing else to do."
"Government revenue needs to be increased. There is no inability to pay salaries. The rupee can be given by the Central Bank as much as it needs, but it needs to be controlled.
