The Minister of Agriculture Mahinda Amaraweera says that discussions are underway to import 65,000 metric tons of fertilizer from India.
Addressing a media briefing today (May 31), the Minister said that Sri Lanka's High Commissioner to India Milinda Moragoda will also take action in this regard.
"We urge the farmers to wait for the fertilizer and not to go to the paddy fields believing that they will get the fertilizer."
He said that steps are being taken to distribute organic manure to paddy farmers and discussions are underway to obtain chemical fertilizers at a high level.
Mr. Mahinda Amaraweera further stated that he has so far requested in writing from seven countries to provide fertilizer to Sri Lanka.
