The Disaster Management Center says that there is a risk of floods in the low lying areas along the Nilwala River and the Kelani River due to the heavy rains prevailing throughout the island.
Its Deputy Director Pradeep Kodippili said that the water level of the Gin River had also risen due to the rains that fell in the upper catchment areas of the Gin River last night.
He added that further showers are expected in the North Western, Western and Central Provinces.
The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has issued landslide warnings for eight districts due to inclement weather.
Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department states that there will be a slight increase in the amount of rain and wind in the island today (May 31) and in the next few days.
