Kanchana Wijeskara, Minister of Power and Energy says that there are sufficient stocks of petrol in the country at present but there is a problem regarding diesel.
The Minister was responding to a question raised by Sajith Premadasa in Parliament on May 5.
He said that due to the sudden breakdown at the Norochcholai power plant, it had to be supplied with diesel due to lack of fuel to generate electricity.
The Minister said that due to this the issuance of diesel to filling stations has been restricted.
Mr. Wijesekera said that steps have been taken to deliver the petrol to the filling station by the ship that arrived in the country yesterday and he hopes that the problem regarding petrol will be resolved within three days.
"We release 4,000 metric tons of diesel to the market daily, but these days we can only release 1,000 to 1,500 metric tons.
We had to make a policy decision whether to give the fuel to the filling station and eliminate the fuel queue or to give the fuel to the power plants and maintain the power cut for 3 hours and 20 minutes. If that happens our power cut will have to go for 7 to 8 hours. Therefore, a policy decision was taken on the advice of His Excellency the President. ”
