Wimal Weerawansa's wife Shashi sentenced to 2 years imprisonment with hard labor


Former Minister Wimal Weerawansa's wife Shashi Weerawansa has been sentenced to two years imprisonment with hard labor by the Colombo Magistrate's Court today (May 27).


The court also imposed a fine of 100,000 rupees and six months' imprisonment if he did not pay the fine.


The court directed that a copy of the decision be forwarded to the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs, stating that public officials had abused their political power.


Announcing the verdict in the case against Shashi Weerawansa on the charge of obtaining an informal state transit passport, the predecessor Colombo Chief Magistrate Buddhika C. Mr. Ragala gave this order.


The case was filed against Shashi Weerawansa Hewan Randunu Mudiyanselage Shirsha Udayanthi for obtaining an informal diplomatic passport by submitting false information to the Department of Immigration and Emigration.
