Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says he will do his utmost to seek the assistance of the International Monetary Fund by September.
Responding to a question raised by the Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella in Parliament on June 8, the Prime Minister said that he had discussed the matter with the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund, Crystalina Georgieva.
The Prime Minister said that he had told her that Sri Lanka needed money soon.
He said she said she would respond positively.
"I talked to the Managing Director of the IMF. What you said is what I said. We were told we needed money for the wedding. Existing programs are being implemented. Give us this soon. We agreed here that he could get money from other countries. She said she would give a good response. I hope we can try to finish this work this month or next month. ”
The Prime Minister further said that in order to overcome the current crisis, we need to think with commitment as well as new thinking.
A statement issued by the Prime Minister's Media Unit stated that the Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and the Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Crystalina Giorgio had a telephone conversation on the evening of June 7 regarding the current economic situation in the country.
The Prime Minister has requested the IMF staff level delegation to visit Sri Lanka as soon as possible so that the staff level agreement can be finalized.
The Prime Minister explained that the financial relationship talks on which Sri Lanka and the IMF staff level agreement are based are finalized.
In response, the IMF Managing Director stated that she was willing to assist Sri Lanka.
