A mother throws her child into the Kelani River

A woman has thrown a small child into the Kelani River near the Kadirana Bridge in Wattala.

   

The woman who had arrived on a crutch last night had thrown the child into the Kelani River and the woman had also tried to jump into the river.

Locals who saw the woman's action prevented her from jumping into the river and handed her over to the police.

Residents of the area have used fishing boats to search for the child in the area around the Kelani River and have not been able to locate the child so far.

The Police Media Unit stated that the missing child was a 5 year old boy residing in the Hedala area and the woman was identified as the mother of the child.

With the assistance of naval officers, the police are conducting further search operations.

The 42-year-old suspect was arrested and produced before the Welisara Magistrate's Court today (June 16).

Wattala Police are conducting further investigations.
