Ada Derana court reporter stated that the petition was filed by three persons including Dr. Maheem Mendis.
The petitioner has asked the Supreme Court to rule that the government has violated the fundamental rights of the people by creating an economic crisis and unbearable inflation in the country due to inefficient economic management and reckless actions.
The respondents are former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, former Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa, the Cabinet, current Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, former Central Bank Governors Ajith Nivard Cabraal and Dr.W. D. Lakshman and the bank's Monetary Board have named 39 people, including former Secretary to the President PB Jayasundara, the Attorney General, the Auditor General, the Bribery Commission and its three commissioners.
The petition states that the Central Bank of Sri Lanka had over US $ 7.6 billion in foreign reserves when the current government took control of the country.
However, due to the reckless economic activities pursued by the government and various reckless economic policies including tax concessions granted to its allies, the Sri Lankan economy is currently facing a serious crisis, reports say.
The petitioners point out that due to this inflation has risen to an unbearable level and the provision of food and essential services to the people on a daily basis is in serious crisis.
The petitioners allege that the situation was created due to the reckless and inefficient economic activities of the respondents and sought a judgment that they had violated the basic human rights of the people.
