Dom Phillips, a veteran British journalist and Brazilian aboriginal expert, has gone missing in the Amazon rainforest.
Phillips, 57, a resource contributor to Brazil's Guardian newspaper, was last seen last week in Javari, Amazonas.
He has been touring the area with his research assistant, Bruno Pereira, a specialist at Funai, the Brazilian government's agency for indigenous affairs. An aboriginal group living in the area said that the two had been threatened by a group a few days ago.
Foreign media reported that the Brazilian federal police and navy have launched a joint search operation.
Two fishermen have been arrested in connection with the disappearance, according to the Brazilian newspaper O Globo.
Dom Phillips has authored a number of articles on the Amazon rainforest and has lived in Brazil for about 10 years.
The two had gone to visit the Jaburu Lake in the Amazon jungle last Friday and were scheduled to return to Atalaia do Norte on Sunday.
Indigenous groups say they have not yet arrived.
