A part of the historic Galle Fort wall has started to sink.
A part of the fort wall near Kodigala has started to sink like this and after the incident was reported, Galle Heritage Foundation has taken steps to prevent people from coming to the place and protect it.
When asked about this, the chairman of the Galle Urumaya Foundation, Mr. Parakrama Dahanayake, said that the part of the fort wall that is at risk of sinking has been identified and steps will be taken to restore it together with the Department of Archaeology.
The chairman has also stated that the general public has been informed not to travel to that place until then.
He has mentioned that the subsidence has taken place right above the location of the sluice gate system in the fort wall and that this may have happened due to the strong sea waves in the past few days due to the Warakan period.
A part with a diameter of about three feet has sunk like this and it is said that a dona more than twenty feet has been dug.
