Cabinet approves immediate import of explosives “necessary for the country”.

Co-Cabinet Spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardena said that through the intervention of the Ministry of Defense, the cabinet approved the immediate import of explosives needed by the private sector.

He said this today (July 5) while joining the press conference to announce cabinet decisions.

The minister pointed out that there is a shortage of explosives required for the construction industry and other industries in the market.

He also said that since a long time, the monopoly of importing explosives into the country was with the State Commercial Various Legalized Corporation.

He mentioned that there was a shortage of explosives recently due to the current dollar crisis and the decision taken by some countries to limit the export of explosives.

As a result, according to the cabinet paper presented by the President, the Ministry of Defense has obtained the support of the private sector for a period of one year and approved to import the required explosives as well as to take alternative measures to avoid the shortage of explosives.

Although the monopoly of import, storage and distribution of ammonium nitrate explosives used for cement, water gel, emulsion, manufacturing industries and black stone blasting has been assigned to the Government Commercial (Miscellaneous) Statutory Corporation Limited, due to the current shortage of foreign exchange in the country and It is said that the supplier who supplied the materials to the Commerce Corporation for a long time has not been able to supply them.

As a result, there has been a severe impact on the activities of the industries that use those explosives.

As a remedy, the Cabinet has approved the necessary steps to import ammonium nitrate explosives immediately with the intervention of the Ministry of Defense.
