The risk of Covid in Sri Lankan team is increasing

Sri Lankan Test captain Dimuth Karunaratne said that there is a possibility that some new players will lose their Test mandates in the second Test against the Australians starting today (8th) in Galle.

He made these comments while addressing a special press conference held on the internet yesterday (7th).

Dimuth further commented, "Dunit Vellalage and Mahish Thiekshana are among the last 13. Three spinners who played before this have now left the team. Therefore, along with Ramesh Mendis, Dunit Vellalage, Mahish Thiekshana, Lakshan Sandakan and Prabhat Jayasuriya have been added to the final squad. According to that, two out of four of them will definitely get the chance in the match. And only Oshadha Fernando and Kamidu Mendis can be used instead of Dhananjaya de Silva. Accordingly, there is more chance for Kamidu Mendis to get the chance. He is a good middle order batsman who can bowl. However, depending on the spinners selected for the final team, consideration will be given to selecting Osadha or Kamindu." said.

Dimuth answered the question about the pitch for the second test match and said this. "It is believed that a pitch that is usually available in Galle will be available here as well. They have asked to provide a pitch that supports the batsmen for two or three days and then spins. Accordingly, I believe that such a pitch will be received."

Here, the Sri Lankan captain spoke about the risk of Covid faced by the team, "Several players have been identified as infected with Covid. Several other players are symptomatic despite not showing positive results in tests to detect Covid-19 infection. Accordingly, it is difficult to say anything about the team composition at this time. However, 13 people have been finally selected so far. However, the final 11 are scheduled to undergo an immediate antigen test before being selected. Based on the results of that test, tomorrow (8th) the final playing team will be selected." said.

And the Sri Lankan captain who said that he can keep hope for the victory, said, "We won in Galle not on pitches that were twisted from the first day. Accordingly, on the first day we went to a huge scoreboard and after that we have won the matches by giving the opponents a big scoreboard and giving a good chance to the spinners. However, they have a world-renowned spinner, so that's the challenge for us. We also believe that we can be successful using the players we have in the face of the uncontrollable risk of Covid." mentioned as

However, the Sri Lanka Cricket Institute officially announced yesterday morning that three more players in the Sri Lankan squad have been identified as infected with Covid. It was also stated in the relevant announcement that this was confirmed by an immediate antigen test conducted on them. Accordingly, Dhananjaya de Silva, Asita Fernando and Geoffrey Vandersay were identified as infected with Covid. It is also stated that the concerned players were immediately transferred to another hotel where they were sent for self-quarantine. It also stated that Lakshan Sandakan has been called up to the Sri Lankan squad with immediate effect.
