What will happen to the parliamentary seat after Ranil becomes president?

Nimal Punchihewa, Chairman of the Election Commission, said that first the name of the Secretary General of the Parliament, Mr. Wickramasinghe, should be published in the Government Gazette as the new President.

It should be done within three days, he said.

Mr. Punchihewa pointed out that the President cannot hold the position of MP.

Accordingly, he further said that another member of the concerned party should be nominated for the vacant position.

"The President cannot hold that MP position. The General Secretary of the Parliament should be gazetted as the President within three days. Parliament does it. Now, as the Election Commission does in a general election, it has to be gazetted within 3 days because it has been approved by the Parliament. Then another MP can be appointed to that party."
