A complaint has been lodged against the Prime Minister and other officials responsible for the Galle Face incident !

 

A group of lawyers have lodged a complaint with the Police Headquarters on May 10 demanding the immediate arrest of the officers involved in the incident at Galle Face and their production in court.

Former Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Johnston Fernando, Sanath Nishantha, Senior DIG in charge of the Western Province Deshabandu Tennakoon and Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya were among those who lodged the complaint yesterday.

The complaint was lodged by Kamal Wijesiri, Attorney-at-Law, Thusitha Gunasekara, Attorney-at-Law, Rajitha Lakmal, Attorney-at-Law and Nishanthi Wettasinghe, Attorney-at-Law.

About 3,000 people who were brought to Temple Trees on May 09 after the Prime Minister's speech were arrested on several criminal charges including drunkenly carrying sticks and attacking peaceful protesters and criminal intimidation.

The complaint also states that those involved in the incident, including former Prime Minister Joston Fernando and Sanath Nishantha, should be arrested and produced before court on charges of criminal conspiracy and aiding and abetting.

Western Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennakoon has also been charged under sections 30 and 37 of the Penal Code, including dereliction of duty, failure to take legal action to prevent it and waiting for a crime to be committed.

Meanwhile, a group of inmates at the Watareka Prison have been reported to have been deployed in yesterday's incident and a complaint has been lodged against the Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upudeniya under the Prisons Act and the Penal Code.

The complaint further states that action should be taken against those who assaulted the Leader of the Opposition Sajith Premadasa and several other members of the Samagi Jana Balawega who were present at the time on charges of criminal intimidation and attempted assault.

The Attorney General has already responded to the complaint and is scheduled to take necessary action on the complaint on May 11 and report to the court.
