Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe today (May 13) called on Indian High Commissioner Gopal Bhalle, Japanese Ambassador Mitsukosi Hideyaki and US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Julie J. Dang and Chinese ambassador Yi Sikliarge have begun talks with diplomats on setting up a foreign forum for financial assistance.
The Prime Minister's Office said in a statement that the discussions with the Indian High Commissioner focused on the steps taken to revive the economy and that the High Commissioner pledged continued support to Sri Lanka.
The Japanese Ambassador also pledged their continued support for the stabilization of the Sri Lankan economy during his meeting with the Prime Minister and stated that he would leave for Tokyo (May 14) to discuss Sri Lanka.
A statement issued by the Prime Minister's Office said that the two Ambassadors discussed measures taken to obtain assistance from other foreign countries to assist the Sri Lankan economy.
The office said the Prime Minister had discussed with the US Ambassador the upcoming visit of the US Treasury Department team to Sri Lanka.
The 19th Amendment to the Constitution and the strengthening of Parliamentary Oversight Committees were also discussed.
During his meeting with the Prime Minister, the Chinese Ambassador pledged his continued support to Sri Lanka and pledged to review the assistance provided to Sri Lanka.
Before leaving for the United Kingdom, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe also had a telephone conversation with British High Commissioner Sarah Hulton on the situation in Sri Lanka. It has stated that it intends to inform the British government about this.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister held a separate emergency meeting with the participation of senior Ministers of the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum Resources including former Ministers Kanchana Wijesekera, Susil Premajayantha and Sagala Ratnayake.
Accordingly, the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement that the country's energy crisis and possible measures to ease the burden on the people were discussed at the meeting.
