More than 25,000 kilos of bananas brought to the Thambuththegama Economic Center had to be destroyed, said the Chairman of the Thambuththegama Economic Center, Sunil Seneviratne today (16).
The bananas were taken by farmers from Eppawala, Katiyawa, Galnewa, Bulnewa and Nochchiyagama areas to the Thambuththegama Economic Center for sale on the eve of Vesak Poya Day.
The chairman of the Economic Center said that this situation was due to the absence of traders.
Speaking further Chairman of the Thambuththegama Economic Center Sunil Seneviratne said.
‘Traders come from as far away as Kandy, Gampaha and Colombo to buy fruits including bananas. However, they do not travel to remote areas such as Thambuththegama due to the fuel crisis in the country. They say their lorries have no way of getting diesel. '
"As a result, farmers were unable to sell more than 25,000 kilos of bananas brought in by seven or eight lorries." Part of the bananas were taken to a group of people to be given to the elephants. The remaining bananas were dumped in the garbage, ”Seneviratne said.
