News with both sadness and happiness! It is 50 years today since Sri Lanka became a republic! Happy for that! But at the age of 50 the country goes bankrupt! Sad for that!
Today marks the 50th anniversary of Sri Lanka becoming a People's Government.
On February 4, 1948, Sri Lanka gained Dominion status.
Under the Dominion, Ceylon was headed by the King of Britain, and the Governor acted as the King's representative of Britain.
In addition, under the Dominion status, the Privy Council of Britain held the highest jurisdiction in the country.
Against this backdrop, the 1970 election gave the Samagi Peramuna the opportunity to form a government with a two-thirds majority.
The main promise of their election campaign was to make Ceylon a completely independent republic from Britain.
Accordingly, the first attempt of the Samagi Peramuna government to draft a republican constitution was made by Dr. Colvin R., a lawyer. Mr. de Silva took the lead.
In fulfillment of that promise, the first Republican Constitution was adopted on May 22, 1972 and the country became a republic.
However, today, the 50th anniversary of becoming a republic, Sri Lanka has been declared a bankrupt country.
