President's Special Statement: "Appointment of a new Prime Minister this week - ready to give more powers to the Prime Minister"

President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa says that steps will be taken this week to appoint a Prime Minister and a Cabinet who have won the confidence of a majority in Parliament.

He made this statement while addressing the nation today (May 11) in a special statement.

He also said that steps would be taken to amend the constitution to re-enact the contents of the 19th Amendment so that Parliament would have more powers.

The President further stated that the new government that will be elected will allow the abolition of the Presidential system in consultation with all after stabilizing the country.
