The International Monetary Fund says governments should provide food and energy subsidies for the poorest in society.
Its managing director, Crystalina Giorgiova, said that without such subsidies and without state support, protests in Sri Lanka could spread to other countries.
"People around the world are struggling with the rising cost of living and need to be subsidized for food and energy," she said.
She also pointed out that it is more appropriate to provide relief to the people directly in a targeted manner.
"Many governments help the people of their countries and some criticize that it is not enough," she said.
Food prices have hit record highs this year, and fuel and gas prices have risen sharply, according to foreign media reports.
The reports point out that the worldwide Kovid epidemic and the Russo-Ukrainian war are the main reasons for this.
However, the head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Cristalina Geogieva, has further stated that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is working with governments to ensure the sustainability of the global economy.
