Jathika Jana Balawega MP Vijitha Herath says that it is not appropriate for a 'criminal' to hold a cabinet ministerial post in a country.
He was commenting today on Minister Prasanna Ranatunga who was sentenced to 2 years imprisonment with hard labor and suspended for 5 years for allegedly extorting Rs. 64 million from a businessman.
He said the president also had a responsibility to decide whether to retain such individuals in the cabinet.
"I have to resign. The sentence was handed down by a high court. Something like this is not just an accusation. It is an extortion. Not a small amount but a big ransom of 64 million rupees. Even if a court finds him guilty of such a heinous crime, a moral Member of Parliament, a Chief Minister, or even a Cabinet Minister in the country should really resign.
The President also has a responsibility not to keep such people in the Cabinet any longer.
It is not at all appropriate for such a criminal to be a cabinet minister, even if he is given a suspended sentence with hard labor. ”
