Electricity Amendment Bill

Removal of Legal Barriers to Renewable Energy Projects and

The Minister said that only a limited section of the CEB was opposed to this, but that even after the amendment, the CEB had the power to decide prices.

“The CEB last week asked me to increase electricity tariffs by 300% at a cost of 756 billion rupees. We get only 250 billion rupees. There is a deficit of 500 billion rupees. But why spend so much money? The cost of purchasing fuel for these diesel power plants is also the cost of the officers' salaries. Every 3 years the salaries of the officers are increased by 25%. Is this bill to be paid for the rising wages of the people? I make it clear that I will not bring such a proposal to the Cabinet. ”

The Minister said that the CEB officials should take action to reduce the cost of generation and not to burden the people by blocking renewable energy projects and increasing their salaries.
