FAO donates 365,000 bags of urea fertilizer free of charge to farmers

Mahinda Amaraweera, Minister of Agriculture, Wildlife and Wildlife Conservation says that the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has agreed to implement a number of special projects during the forthcoming Maha season to provide the necessary assistance to uplift the economic status of the farming community in the country.

 

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has agreed to provide 365,000 bags of urea fertilizer free of charge to low income farming families for paddy cultivation during the Maha season 2022 and 2023.


The Minister of Agriculture stated that it has been decided to provide one bag of urea fertilizer to 365,000 low income farming families island wide.


The World Food and Agriculture Organization (WFO) has also agreed to provide  18,000 ($ 50) to each of the 14,000 low-income families for green gram cultivation during the coming Maha season.


The Minister further said that it has been decided to give priority to the cultivation of green gram, maize and soya required for the production of the currently suspended Thriposha during the Maha season.
