Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has agreed to expedite the provision of fertilizer for the Yala season, President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said.
The Presidential Media Unit has also issued a statement in this regard.
The announcement states that the stock of fertilizer will be received under the Indian loan assistance and it is planned to distribute the stock of fertilizer within 20 days of receiving it in Sri Lanka.
The President made this observation at a discussion held at the President's House in Fort June 1 on the challenges and solutions facing the irrigation sector.
It has been revealed that the Uma Oya and Moragahakanda projects can be completed before the end of this year and the benefits for the Maha season can be provided and the Morana, Mahagalgamuwa Poshitha Ela, Mahagona Wewa, Vilakandiya Wewa and Godigamuwa Wewa projects are to be completed concurrently.
The President also instructed that steps be taken to complete foreign funded projects within the stipulated time frame.
The announcement further states that 50% of the lands irrigated by the Irrigation Department and the Mahaweli Authority have been sown for cultivation during the Yala season.
