Sources at the Katunayake International Airport say that a dispute has arisen between the two countries over the detention of a Russian Aeroflot aircraft at the Katunayake airport due to non-payment of insurance premiums to an Irish insurance company.
The sources said that the detention of the aircraft in this manner had caused controversy as the top diplomatic leaders of the Russian Federation and the top heads of state of the Sri Lankan government had reached a written agreement that Russian aircraft would not be detained for any reason when they arrived in Sri Lanka. Russia is the largest tourist destination in Sri Lanka. An airline spokesman said that around 400,000 tourists were expected to arrive in Sri Lanka this winter.
He added that about 250 tourists were on board the flight from Russia.
The Russian Aeroflot operates direct flights to Katunayake Airport three days a week on Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.
The spokesman said that the arrival of Russian tourists to Sri Lanka in this manner, thereby gaining foreign exchange for the country and creating a tense situation with Russia, a long standing friendly country, was a conspiracy to break the close ties between the two countries.
Many other aircraft, including this one, were insured by an Irish insurance company, making it difficult for the company to pay insurance premiums due to the sudden Ukraine-Russia war.
As a solution to this, Aeroflot Airlines has reinsured all these aircraft to an insurance company in Russia.
They have lodged a complaint with the Colombo Commercial High Court against the suspension of premiums to the Irish Insurance Company.
