Twenty two thousand applications for dual citizenship are stuck

Twenty two thousand three hundred and eighty eight (22,388) applications for dual citizenship have been received but their completion has been delayed due to various reasons, according to information revealed at the Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts (COPA).

These applications were received for a period of two years from 2018 to 2020.

However, it has been revealed that only 10077 applications had been completed.

Officials of the Department of Immigration and Emigration have stated before the committee that the granting of dual citizenship has been delayed due to delays in payment of documents, delays in security clearance certificates and delays in obtaining the signature of the Minister when a large number of applications are submitted for approval.

The Committee noted the delays and problems in registering foreign-born children born to one or both Sri Lankan parents in Sri Lanka and recommended that the authorities take necessary steps to expedite this process.
