She had been ill for some time and passed away at home this morning (June 19).
Her last rites will be held at Borella Cemetery on Wednesday, June 22, he said.
She was 78 years old at the time of her death.
She started acting at the age of 17 and has been shining on the Sri Lankan stage, teledrama as well as the silver screen for nearly six decades.
In 1962, G.D.L. participated in a drama competition organized by the Arts Council of Sri Lanka. She made her acting debut in Perera's stage play 'Sama'.
She also won the Best Actress award for her role in the play Sama, which was later made into a film of the same name.
Mrs. Leoni Kotelawala had the opportunity to play the role of Sama in the film and due to problems at that time the film could not be screened.
However, the release of Chandali in 1964 paved the way for her to embark on a long journey in Sri Lankan cinema.
Nominated, Best Actress at the 1966 University Awards, and Best Actress at the 1988 OCIC Awards.
