Cabinet decision regarding casinos

A proposal submitted by the Prime Minister as the Minister of Finance to the Cabinet to regularize the casino industry has been approved by the Cabinet.

This proposal has been submitted to the cabinet to formally collect the relevant taxes from the establishments currently engaged in the casino business.

The Casino Business Act No. 17 of 2010 and the Betting and Gaming Tax Act No. 40 of 1988 provide for the regulation of the casino industry in Sri Lanka.

Under the Casino Business Act No. 17 of 2010, licenses are required to be granted for running casino businesses in Sri Lanka, but the necessary orders to enforce the provisions of that Act have not been issued so far.

As a result, no license has been issued to any casino business under the Act.

Accordingly, it has become difficult to formally collect the relevant taxes from the entities currently engaged in the casino business.

As a remedy, Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe has submitted the relevant proposal to the Cabinet to issue orders under the Casino Business Act No. 17 of 2010 and to introduce appropriate amendments to the Betting and Gaming Tax Act No. 40 of 1988.
