He said this while joining a joint press conference with opposition leader Sajith Premadasa today (July 19).
He announced that today would be named “Convention Day”.
Mr. Alahapperuma who also commented there...
"For most of the time, the islanders on Parliament Island, surrounded by seawater, could not understand the voices of the people outside the island.
They demanded to change this political culture. To unite for the sake of the people. That is the collection that has happened. Not greedy.
I am grateful to the leader of the opposition that until yesterday, as a party, he had decided that he too would contest the election.
I thank him. He made a great sacrifice. It is a sacrifice of gratitude. I have no qualms about it. After this, we ask the country to make this ideal given in the parliament the ideal of the country without dividing into nations and parties. Otherwise, one party and one leader cannot build the country from this crisis. We bowed to that reality.
I suggest that today we make the determination to free the people from the problems of this country. We also invite those who submitted nominations today. Let us as a group understand the sentiments of the people and realize the date of the convention.”
