Cabinet approves proposal to grant leave to public servants on Fridays

The Cabinet has approved a proposal to declare Friday a public holiday for public servants.

Accordingly, the relevant holiday will be implemented from next Friday (June 17), said Minister Dinesh Gunawardena.

The holiday will be extended to the next three months for government employees other than those providing essential services such as education, health, water, electricity, defense, transport, ports and aviation.

The Minister said that due to the current shortage of fuel, passenger transport has been disrupted and it has become a problem for public sector employees to have access to their own transport facilities.

It also aims to encourage government officials to engage in farming in the home garden or elsewhere as a solution to the food shortages that are expected to occur in the future.
