Counsel for the lawyer who influenced the removal of the petition of a Galle Face activist without hearing it !


The Supreme Court yesterday (June 02) ordered the dismissal of a fundamental rights petition filed by a protester seeking an injunction restraining the police from disbanding the 55-day peaceful protest at Galle Face.


MNN, a resident of Dickwella, Matara. The petition was filed by a civil engineer named Hameem.


Supreme Court Judge Buwaneka Aluvihare, Judge LTTE Dehideniya and Judge A.H.M.D. The petition was taken up before a three-member tribunal headed by Nawaz.


The petition was filed by the IGP, the Army Commander, the Defense Secretary and the Secretary to the President as respondents.


Speaking on behalf of the Attorney General, Senior State Counsel Shavindra Wickrama stated that the struggle was being carried out by blocking access roads to the Presidential Palace, the official residence of the President, the Presidential Secretariat, the Presidential Secretariat and several other key government institutions. And that it even interferes with public administration.


He also said that in such a situation where there is a serious economic crisis in the country, it is a serious situation to allow any action that could hinder the country from taking place, but only to help the country recover from the crisis.


Furthermore, how can this petitioner infringe on his fundamental rights? He stated that the petition did not indicate that the petition should not be allowed to be heard.


The bench accepted the facts and ordered that the petition be dismissed without permission.
