The CEB has taken 50 broken generators - The loss was Million 3,100

It was revealed at the COPE Committee that 50 generators purchased by the Ceylon Electricity Board at a cost of  3,100 million were not functional at the time of purchase.

It was revealed about the generators purchased for the period 2018 and 2019.

The COPE Chairman recommended that a report be submitted to the Auditor General's Department within two weeks.

This was brought to the notice of the Committee on Public Enterprises (CPC) chaired by its Chairperson Prof. Charitha Herath at its recent meeting in Parliament to examine the CEB's Auditor General's Reports for 2017 and 2018 and their current performance.

The committee members inquired as to whether the generators were not in working condition at the time of purchase and therefore a quality check was made on these purchases and the cost incurred for this purpose.

Officials who were present at the event said that officials had inspected the purchases and that 3,100 million had been spent on the purchases and that all 50 generators were still in operation today.

The Committee Members further stated that these generators were not operational at the beginning and will be operational after the modernization.

Accordingly, a formal inquiry should be conducted into the procurement of generators that are not in working condition, regardless of the time period in which they were purchased.
