The Minister said that the Indian government has decided to supply this stock of fertilizer imported from Oman for their needs considering the current shortage of fertilizer in our country.
He was speaking at a discussion on the progress of foreign-funded agriculture projects under the Ministry of Agriculture.
He said that the National Fertilizer Secretariat, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Commercial Fertilizer Company, the Ceylon Fertilizer Company and other networks are planning to distribute the fertilizer to farmers within two to three days as soon as it is received. Arrangements have been made to hand over the bundle of urea fertilizer to farmers at a cost of Rupees. 10,000.
He said that the agreement was reached during discussions with Agrarian representatives and officials and that no one objected when the prices were submitted to the Cabinet.
Arrangements have been made to release this stock of fertilizer to the paddy cultivators in the out season.
However, farmers in some areas such as Ampara are not benefiting from the urea fertilizer as it is currently being harvested, he said, adding that the targeted yield could be increased by applying urea fertilizer to paddy fields that have already started cultivation and have a good crop.
